In Piano Lesson, 1982/87–2022, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s long-standing fascination with comic books comes clearly into focus. While characters such as the Joker, Superman, Thor and Captain America recur across his wider practice, Piano Lesson centres on a Batman and Robin figure, rendered through Basquiat’s unmistakable visual language. Scribbled figures, fragmented text and bold, graphic motifs collapse the boundaries between drawing, language and familiar pop-cultural references.

Produced as a screenprint, Piano Lesson captures a child-like enthusiasm for superheroes while carrying the weight of Basquiat’s deeper concerns. Vivid colours and expressive line work underscore his exploration of pop culture, identity and social commentary, resulting in a composition that feels both playful and intellectually charged.
